What is Generative AI ?

Turning AI topics into a walk in the park, not a mind-boggling maze

ChatGPT this…ChatGPT that…but what is ChatGPT really? The GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformers and it's a Generative AI (Gen AI) tool. Gen AI is just one subset of the overarching realm of Artificial Intelligence. This type of AI excels in creating new content, like text and images, learning and evolving from billions of data points.

So instead of taking a book and suggesting similar ones for you to read, like AI-based recommendation engines would do, this form of AI can create an entirely new novel from scratch based on the details you provide.

Think of Gen AI as a genius friend that has read every book and seen every type of image that has ever existed. Now, ask that friend to create a modified version of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa that is more fitting for the 21st century and you'll get something like the picture above. As new text and images are created, the AI learns from each instance and it continues to generate new, unique content.

Here are some examples of what Gen AI can do for you:

  • Create a to-do list with household tasks for the day

  • Develop an outline and a script for a social media video you want to produce

  • Craft snazzy, eye catching product descriptions that attract new customers

  • Initiate a new business by developing a business plan, logo, and website outline

  • Compose an email to your manager suggesting a pay raise next year for the outstanding work you've accomplished in 2023

Why does this matter?

In the near future, Gen AI is set to become the primary creator of online content. Its efficiency in content generation is rapidly reshaping the internet landscape and as it continues to advance, its capacity to produce text, images, and multimedia that closely mimic human creations is reshaping the way we perceive and interact with online content. This means we have to take proactive measures to preserve the transparency of authorship.

AI News Flash

Catch the latest AI news that is making all of the headlines this week!

For years now, we've been wondering what comes next after smartphones. If movies were accurate, we would have had chips in our brains and be talking to our friends and family through full holograms in our living room by now. Instead, we have wearables such as smartwatches, and virtual/augmented reality headsets and glasses that are on the verge of becoming even more popular. Enter: Humane - the company that wants you to ditch all of that (and your phone) for a Pin that is powered by AI.

Built by a duo that previously worked at Apple, the Pin attaches to your clothing and is able to see what you see. You interact with it through voice commands, touching the Pin itself, and various hand gestures as it projects a Laser Ink Display onto your palm. It's built using OpenAI and Microsoft technology and will use T-Mobile as its service network…oh yeah…you'll have to get a new phone number to use the Pin. Good luck getting your friends to text you on a second number.

The Pin promises next-level AI to assist your daily living, but based on the few video demos we've seen, there's a lot of "coming soon" features with this device, which currently makes it a big gamble to buy/pre-order considering that it's $699 + a $24 monthly subscription.

What sticks out the most is that I still need to bring my hand up to my chest to tap the Pin to engage it or hold it out awkwardly to project the Laser Ink Display…isn't that basically the same level of effort as taking a phone out of a pocket and holding it to use the AI-powered apps?

We'll have to wait and see if Humane's AI powered device can create a seamless experience that boosts daily living, or if this is just another tech product that doesn't live up to its marketing hype. But the real question is: Are we ready to stop using smartphones, something that has become ubiquitous with daily living around the world, and move on to a new form of interaction? If this "experiment" is successful, it may lead to a whole new line of wearable products.

AI Company Spotlight

Explore trailblazing companies that are shaping our digital future

Have you ever wanted to build an app, but you don't have any background in coding and you're not sure where to start? Builder.AI takes aim at making app development accessible to a broader audience - basically anyone.

At the heart of Builder.AI is its unique "no-code" platform, enabling you to select features from a library and build an app through drag-and-drop functionality. You can leverage Natasha, their AI Product Manager, to shape your app and most importantly, you'll own your code - unlike some competitors where you're essentially "renting" it.

Why does this matter?

Companies like this change the competitive landscape. By making a "no-code" app-building platform available, there is no longer gate-keeping anyone from being able to bring an app idea to life.

How many times have you downloaded an app and said "Hey this app is great…but…I wish I could change just one or two things with it!" Well now you can create it yourself and build the features you deem important.

App development will become significantly more affordable for individuals and small businesses, with shorter development cycles, increased control over the entire process, and greater room for creativity.
